Nothing ever prepares you for the heartbreak of losing your dog to cancer. Cardiac hemangiosarcoma is fast, cruel, and impossible to understand — why must it take such a big piece of us away?
Just two weeks before we lost Jib, he collapsed suddenly on our daily walk. For almost nine years, he had been perfectly healthy, goofy, and full of life. The vet told us we had only minutes, hours — maybe days — before he would bleed again. He endured three pericardial taps to remove the blood around his heart, but the prognosis was devastating. There was no cure.
Before we could even consider chemo, this disease took him suddenly while we were out buying him new treats. Jib passed in my arms on the way to the ER, and I will never forget the pain of losing my soul dog.
But Jib’s story is more than heartbreak — it’s joy. He was our very first golden retriever, the happiest, goofiest boy you could ever meet. He loved hiking trails, swimming in lakes, and eating birthday cake. His playful spirit made everyone smile, and his kind, old-soul heart touched everyone he met. He taught us how to love deeply and unconditionally.
In the midst of our grief, Canine Cancer Alliance gave us something we desperately needed: hope and education. It’s where we learned about the promising Yale Vaccine, developed by Dr. Mark Mamula, which teaches the immune system to recognize and attack hemangiosarcoma cells. Both Mari, who founded Canine Cancer Alliance after losing her own beloved dog, and Dr. Mamula, who has also faced this disease personally, have poured their hearts into finding answers.
Their mission is simple yet powerful: to give dogs more tomorrows with the families who love them.
That’s why we are committed to supporting their work. Jib inspired my entire business from the beginning, and now his legacy lives on through our gear — especially the bandanas created in his honor.
You can join us in Jib’s legacy:

Let’s honor Jib by fueling hope, funding research, and fighting for a future where fewer families have to face this heartbreak.
Every dog deserves more tomorrows.
